One hundred and forty-four years ago, a fresh young graduate set out to change the world. He travelled half way around the world, landing on the north coast of Formosa. His name: George L. Mackay. His profession: missionary. He went on to have a spectacularly successful career.

Why, you might ask; did his mission flourish, while others floundered and failed. Was it his striking outward appearance? No. Was it the six years he spent walking the paths and hiking the mountain trails to reach as many towns and villages as he could? No. Was it the forty thousand dental extractions performed at no charge to anyone in need? No. It was his ability to attract in and retain the best and the brightest people in every community he contacted. Similarly, today, Mackay Medical College attracts the best administrators, the best faculty, and some of the best and brightest students from all over Taiwan.

To the graduates here today, you are now officially a part of the Mackay legacy: at once a badge of honour and a challenge. Ping An.

也許你會問：為什麼他的傳道任務欣欣向榮，而其他人卻困頓失敗？是因為他有引人注目的儀表嗎？不是。是因為他曾經花了六年的歲月翻山越嶺，盡他所能進入許多鄉村部落嗎？不是。是他拔了四萬顆牙齒，對有需要的人分毫不取費用嗎？不是。是因為他有能力，每到一個地方就吸引並且留住最優秀和最聰明的人。同樣地，今天的馬偕醫學院由台灣各地吸引了最佳的行政人才、最好的教師和一群最優秀聰明的學生。

今天在場的畢業生，你現在就正式成為馬偕家族的一份子：這是立刻加在您身上的榮譽，也同時是挑戰！平安！
